The Ultimate Guide to Copenhagen

Copenhagen is a city filled with rich history that buzzes with excitement. Through the six weeks that I was lucky enough to call the vibrant capital of Denmark home, I gained a feel for the city, and everything it has to offer. Whether you choose to visit one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, the famous waterways of Nyhavn, the little mermaid, or the incredible Danish castles in the countryside, there is more than enough to keep you busy for days on end. In order to spend your time most efficiently in Copenhagen, I have compiled a list of my favourite things to do, that will give you a feel for why the city is so special in a short period of time.

Rent a Bike

The best way to experience Copenhagen is on two wheels. The city is famously bike-friendly, with dedicated lanes everywhere, making it easy (and fun) to cruise between neighbourhoods like a local.

Grab a Coffee on the Ilium Rooftop

Head to the rooftop of Illum for a coffee with a view. It’s a cozy space above the city where you can sip something warm while people watching above Copenhagen’s rooftops and church spires.

Ride the Roller Coaster at Tivoli Gardens

One of the world’s oldest amusement parks, Tivoli blends nostalgia and thrill. Whether you’re riding the classic wooden coaster or just wandering the lantern-lit gardens, it’s pure magic, especially around the winter festival season.

Visit the Famous Kronborg Castle

A short trip from the city takes you to Kronborg Castle, famously known as Hamlet’s castle. Walk the grand halls, explore the underground passages, and take in sweeping views of the Øresund Strait.

Explore the Colourful Buildings in Nyhavn

Nyhavn’s rainbow-coloured townhouses and historic boats are as postcard-perfect as it gets. Wander along the canal, grab a drink on the waterfront, and enjoy the lively atmosphere.

Window Shop Along Strøget

One of Europe’s longest pedestrian streets, Strøget is ideal for a leisurely stroll. From international brands to Danish design shops, it’s perfect for browsing—even if you don’t buy a thing.

Grab a Bite at the Glass Market

Copenhagen’s Glass Market is a casual food hall packed with international flavours. It’s a great stop when everyone wants something different, with options ranging from Nordic classics to global street food.

Relax at Copenhot

For a uniquely Scandinavian experience, book a session at CopenHot. Soak in hot tubs by the water, embrace the sauna culture, and cool off with a refreshing dip if you’re feeling brave.

Explore the Neighbourhood of Sydhavn

Sydhavn offers a quieter, more local side of the city. Think modern architecture, harbour walks, swimming spots, and fewer crowds. It is perfect for a relaxed afternoon wander if you want to escape the hustle of the downtown area.

Visit Amalienborg

Home to the Danish royal family, Amalienborg is both elegant and impressive. Time your visit to catch the changing of the guard, then explore the surrounding square and nearby waterfront. If you enjoy the tale of the little mermaid, you can also wander 10 or so minutes further down the water to view the famous statue.

Enjoy a Bowl of Ramen at Slurp

After a day of exploring, Slurp hits the spot. Their yummy broths and chewy noodles make it a favourite for locals and visitors. The space is small so make sure you have time to spare if you are waiting for a spot, but it is worth the wait for comfort food done right!

Climb the Round Tower

Skip the stairs and walk the spiral ramp to the top of the Round Tower. The reward is one of the best views in the city, especially on a clear day.

Visit the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

Located just north of Copenhagen, the Louisiana Museum combines world-class modern art with stunning seaside views. Even non-art lovers will appreciate the setting alone.

Explore Freetown Christiana

A colourful and alternative part of Copenhagen that is best suited for adults. With it's free-spirited culture, open trade, and raw, unfiltered atmosphere it is less appropriate for kids or those looking for a polished tourist experience. For those who want something unique however, I loved learning about this area of the city.

Eat your Afternoon Away at Reffen Island

Reffen is a food-lover’s dream. This waterfront street-food market is packed with vendors, communal seating, and a relaxed vibe. On occasion, Reffen also hosts festivals and events, so it is worth checking out the calendar!
